Geoffrey West: Organisms, Cities, Companies & the Science of Scale | #12

Updated: Jul 27

Geoffrey West, a theoretical physicist from the Santa Fe Institute, was my latest podcast guest.

Geoffrey shared insights from his book, "Scale," about the remarkable regularities that underlie how organisms, cities, and companies scale in size. This includes key insights into why organisms and companies are mortal -- they grow, stop growing, and inevitably die -- while cities have open-ended growth.

The question arises: can companies achieve open-ended growth by organizing themselves in city-like ways, and are some modern tech companies achieving this?

Few startup founders and executives are aware of Geoffrey West, although there are exceptions. Certain well-known executives have paid attention to his insights. One example is given in the audio clip below.

You can find the full conversation in the "Episodes" section above.
